Preparing for the First Day

Starting Child Care or changing from one Centre to another can be difficult for some children.  By following the information provided below we hope to make the transition process easier for all involved.

  •  Visit the Centre with your child for a few mornings/afternoons prior to their actual start date.
  •  Join in the activities, encouraging your child to participate.
  •  If possible leave your child for short periods at first gradually increasing the time spent away.  This allows the child to become secure in knowing that you will return (you will need to stay on the premises during this time).
  • If you can try to keep your child’s first few days short.
  • Always say goodbye to your child, if they begin to cry when you leave, come back early or ring later to see how they have settled in.  We do not mind how many times you ring during the day, starting a child in care can be just as upsetting for the parents as for the child.
  • Children settle better with a quick goodbye.
  • Upon arrival, put bags, nappies etc away first before going into the room.  This enables the staff to settle the child more easily.
  • Always let the staff know how you are feeling and what you would like to do.  We are here to help!
  • A child's adjustment into a centre varies.  Some take only a day to feel at home, others weeks.  Some may be fine at first and become upset a few weeks after commencement.
  • Lastly, try not to blame yourself if your child is not settling in.  It is a new experience which needs to be handled gently and with love.
For records and planning purposes, please inform centre staff of the following:
  • The time you plan to usually arrive with your child;
  • The time you plan to usually depart with your child;
  • When your child is going on holidays;
  • If you would like to change your care arrangements (eg swapping days) at least 24 hours in advance;
  • If your contact details have changed;
  • If your emergency contact details have changed;
  • Whether your child has been immunised.
Please note that the enrolment form has a section for authorising others to pick up your child.  Please ensure that you list anyone who will be picking up your child.  Persons not listed on the form will be refused if they arrive at the Centre to pick up your child without written permission.

Please feel free to make a mutually convenient time if you would like to talk with your child’s carer at length. Staff are always happy to make time for this.
